– Jersey Coast Sport Fliers

to present Aviation Day

By Peter Elacqua

The Jersey Coast Sport Fliers (JCSF) are set to take off for their third annual National Model Aviation Day.

The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at Dorbrook Park, Route 537, Colts Neck.

National Model Aviation Day will include demonstrations of model airplanes, information about the club and exhibits. Seating for visitors will be provided, but guests are also welcome to bring a chair.

The JCSF, which was established in 1973, is a nonprofit organization with 115 participating members. The organization is affiliated with the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), which has 2,350 clubs and more than 175,000 members nationwide.

The club’s members fly radio-controlled planes, and helicopters, gliders and planes that require fuel such as alcohol or gasoline. The most popular plane in the club is a plane that runs on electricity.

The current president, Robert Kallok, has been a member for 20 years and the organization’s president for five years.

Kallok said the club members attend the Northeast Electric Aircraft Technology fair in New York state, and the Warbirds Over Delaware and Warbirds Over Pennsylvania events.

“We are not just a local club, we are involved in a lot of other clubs and their events in the area,” Kallok said.

According to recording secretary Darryl Schlosser, the goal of the organization is to promote the enjoyment of model aviation by holding classes and advertising through the Monmouth County Park System.

Schlosser said that at Aviation Day, the club will accept donations for the Arc of Monmouth, an organization that is dedicated to providing for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Kallok said the club’s members have conducted road cleanups twice a year for a number of years and have hosted fundraising events for organizations such as the Monmouth County Friends of the Parks and the Colts Neck First Aid Squad.

“The AMA tries very hard to have (member) clubs give back to the community,” Kallok said.

“We have members who are 12 years old and we have members in their 90’s,” Schlosser said. “We have people who come from all different walks of life, including some who are real pilots.”

The JCSF is an AMA Gold Leader Club, which is the highest level of recognition from the AMA Leader program. The title is given to an organization with longstanding membership and dedication to volunteer work.

The Jersey Coast Sport Fliers is open to the general public.

Kallok said club members host events for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and show the young men how to fly model aircraft.

As for new people getting involved with model aviation, Kallok said, “I tell people it depends on how much of a budget they have. If they want to buy everything new, it could be more expensive. However, if they want to get into the hobby by buying secondhand equipment, it would be less expensive. If people come to us for advice we will direct them to the people we know with the best deals.”
