EAST BRUNSWICK – The investigation into a fiery crash that closed northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike is ongoing.

The fiery tractor-trailer accident brought traffic to a halt near exit 9 of the New Jersey Turnpike on Aug. 12, according to New Jersey State Police. All northbound lanes were closed during the blaze as well as both lanes of exit 9.

According to Sgt. Jeff Flynn, the accident occurred near mile marker 82 on the northbound side of the turnpike.

Police responded to the incident at 7:53 p.m. on Aug. 12.

One lane remained closed to traffic on Aug. 13.

According to a New Jersey Turnpike Aug. 13 twitter post all northbound lanes were expected to open soon.

Flynn said a tractor-trailer in the right lane sideswiped a tractor-trailer in the center lane, causing both to burst into flames.

East Brunswick Independent Fire Company No. 2 responded and firefighters extinguished the blaze, according to a firefighter with the volunteer company.

Both drivers escaped with only minor injuries.

Police closed the outer lanes of the turnpike, which were reopened at 10 p.m.

According to a New Jersey State Police spokesman, there have been no charges filed.

In another incident of a vehicle fire on the New Jersey Turnpike, on Aug. 4 a dump truck fell on its side in a southbound lane, after hitting the Wood Avenue overpass in Linden near exist 13A. The truck burst into flames, killing the driver, Woodbridge Township resident Allen Yuhasz.
