PENNINGTON — Eight homes were evacuated on North Main Street Wednesday morning after a backhoe operator struck an underground gas main, police reported.
North Main Street was closed after the 10:49 a.m. incident, and police evacuated the homes as a precaution. The half-inch gas main was struck by a backhoe operated by Pave Patrol of Ewing, police said.
Police said personnel from Elizabethtown Gas were able to shut off the gas and the road was reopened by 12:30 p.m. All residents were allowed to return to their homes, as well.
No injuries were reported, police said.
Hopewell Township police, Pennington Borough police, Hopewell Valley Emergency Services, the Pennington Fire Department and Pennington First Aid Squad all reported to the scene.
