MANVILLE SENIOR CORNER: Aug. 26

Manville seniors again excelled in their collection of school supplies for the students of Roosevelt and Weston schools. The supplies will be distributed the first week of school.
Since we did a good job with school supplies we will now turn to the veterans by getting extra-long twin blankets for them. We will collect them in November.
Manville Senior Citizens meet at noon on the second Thursday of each month at the VFW on Washington Avenue. The next meeting is Sept. 10.
Residents of Manville age 50 and older are eligible for membership. Also, persons who do not remain residents of Manville are still eligible for membership.
The town is currently going through a complete revaluation for the 2016 tax year. Manville Tax Collector Lisa Gerickont explained the procedures and what to expect. The representative from the contracted company, Realty Appraisal Co., will have photographic identification and a letter from Tax Assessor Glen Stives. If you are unsure of the person at the door contact the Manville Police Department for verification.
The representative will inspect the interior and exterior of the home and measure and photograph the exterior. You will receive a letter of the new assessment. Should you disagree with it there will be a specific time frame for the objection. It is important that you follow the instructions regarding the time frame. An appointment will be set up to discuss the assessment.
Tickets for the Oktoberfest on Thursday, Oct. 8, at Knob Hill section of Colonial Park will be on sale at the September meeting. Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for guests. There will be entertainment and food catered by Elmer’s Catering.
Nomination forms for 2016 officers will be given out Sept. 10. The election will be held at the November meeting.
Canned goods or nonperishable food items continue to be collected before each meeting. Remember to bring one item per member to stock the Food Bank.
Blood pressure screening for members is held before the beginning of each meeting, starting at 11:30 a.m.
The executive board will continue to hold its meetings on the Thursday prior to the regular meeting.
