The characteristics of new homes

Annual census data gives a close look at the year in new construction

Every year, hundreds of thousands of new homes are constructed. And every year, the U.S. Census Bureau highlights the makeup of the new homes in its annual “Survey of New Construction.” Here, a look at the makeup of new homes from 2014:

There were 620,000 new single-family homes completed in 2014. Of them:

 565,000 had air-conditioning

 64,000 had two bedrooms or fewer; 282,000 had at least four bedrooms

 25,000 had one and a half bathrooms or fewer; 221,000 had at least three bathrooms

 Vinyl siding was the principal exterior material on 184,000 homes

 263,000 homes were one-story homes

 522,000 had a public sewer system; 95,000 had an individual septic system

 The median size of a completed single family home was 2,453 feet

There were 264,000 multifamily units completed in 2014. Of them:

 23,000 were age-restricted

 127,000 were in buildings of at least 50 units

 123,000 had at least two bathrooms  The median size of a multifamily unit for rent was 1,080 feet; the median size of one built for sale was 1,432 feet.

 There were 11,000 multifamily buildings completed in 2014.

Overall, 437,000 single-family homes were sold in 2014. Of them:

 17,000 were in an age-restricted development

 314,000 were in a homeowners’ association

 169,000 had one story; 244,000 had two stories; 25,000 had at least three stories

 311,000 were paid for with conventional financing; 37,000 were cash purchases

 137,000 had both a patio and a porch

 The average sales price of a new single family home was $345,800.

 The median size of a new single-family home was 2,506 square feet.
