Nine years of service to the people of Allentown will end this week for Borough Clerk Julie Martin.

Martin has been named the municipal clerk in Eatontown and will begin working in that eastern Monmouth County community on Sept. 8.

“My time in Allentown has been a very good experience,” she said. “This was just a better opportunity for me. [Eatontown] is a larger town and I suppose a little bit more to sink my teeth into.”

According to the 2010 U.S. census, Eatontown had 12,709 residents and Allentown had 1,828 residents.

“My colleagues are wonderful people to work with, and I am going to miss them. The residents I have come to know over the last nine years, I am going to miss them, too,” Martin said.

Allentown officials said they will officially announce Martin’s departure at the next Borough Council meeting in September.

Before coming to Allentown in 2006, Martin, who was born and raised in England and moved to the United States 29 years ago, worked for Englishtown starting in 1998. She worked her way up from the municipal clerk’s assistant to borough clerk.

A municipal clerk works with the governing body, handles agendas, resolutions and meeting minutes, issues certain permits and licenses, and ensures that elections run smoothly.

In Eatontown, Martin will also serve as the borough’s qualified purchasing agent. Allentown Borough Council President Wil Borkowski said assistant clerk Nancy Buckalew will be named interim clerk while officials follow the process of hiring a new clerk.

“I worked with [Martin] for seven months, and it was very productive. She is very knowledgeable in municipal law and we all wish her the best going forward. She will be missed,” Borkowski said.
