SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Three residences were left uninhabitable after South Brunswick’s three fire departments battled a blaze at the Oakdale Mobile Home Park on Aug. 25.
The fire was reported at a Lemon Street home off Route 1 around 10:30 p.m., according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department.
A resident was sleeping when he woke up to a smoke detector going off, police said. He observed flames in the kitchen area and attempted to put out the fire, then called 911.
Kendall Park Fire Chief Chris Perez arrived soon thereafter.
“The one mobile home was totally consumed by flames on my arrival, and we had to fight to minimize the fire spread to the other homes,” he said.
The fire destroyed one mobile home and one motor vehicle, and damaged two additional mobile homes.
Seven residents were displaced by the fire. The residents found shelter with friends and family, according to police.
In total, 60 firefighters from the Kendall Park, Monmouth Junction and Kingston fire departments took 20 minutes to bring the fire under control, police said. The Kendall Park and Monmouth Junction First Aid Squads also responded to the call. There were no injuries.
The South Brunswick Fire Marshal’s Office has ruled the cause of the fire non-suspicious, police said.
Perez reminded residents to call 911 at the first sign of fire.
“In this case the first fire engine was on scene in seven minutes. The delay in calling allowed the fire to rapidly grow,” he said.
