The South Brunswick Police Department will once again increase safety and police visibility around town in anticipation of the start of the new school year.
Chief Raymond Hayducka announced that Operation Safe Schools 2015 will create enhanced traffic safety and police presence at all schools.
“The start of each school year creates a lot of adjustments for students, parents, teachers and the motoring public. Our goal is to make sure it is a safe transition,” he said.
Private schools in the township started back Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, with public schools opening Sept 3. In all, more than 10,000 students will be back in school this week.
“This year is unique in that schools are going back in session before Labor Day and drivers need to be aware of the earlier start,” Hayducka said.
At any one time, more the a dozen officers will be dedicated to the operation. The plan will place officers at every school in the district at the start and end of the school day. In addition, enhanced traffic enforcement zones will be established around the schools for traffic enforcement, and officers will specifically be targeting school zone violations. “The added buses, pedestrians and parents dropping off children requires that all drivers slow down and use caution,” Hayducka said.
