– Blood drive slated to honor O.B. woman

A community blood drive in memory of Jessica Uveges LoNigro, an Old Bridge resident, teacher and coach who passed away at age 33 from lupus, is scheduled for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Old Bridge High School Grade 9 Center, 4207 Highway 516. New Jersey Blood Services, a division of New York Blood Center, will conduct the drive.

LoNigro relied on blood donations during her treatment, and her family and friends wanted to sponsor a blood drive to help others receive the same support.

New Jersey Blood Services is seeking help to maintain an adequate supply of all blood types, especially O-negative, the “universal” blood that can be transfused to anyone in an emergency. Current inventory of several blood types is running below the desired target level.

Blood donors will receive free mini-medical exam on site. Eligible individuals must be at least age 16 (with parental permission or consent), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, be in good health and meet all Food and Drug Administration and New York or New Jersey State Department of Health donor criteria. Individuals above age 75 may donate if they present a doctor’s note.

Appointments are suggested and may be made online at http://tinyurl.com/jessicacommunitydrive or by calling 1-800-933-BLOOD. Walk-ins also are welcome.
