– Benefit slated for children’s hospital

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS — A St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fundraiser is scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 19 at Mother Teresa Regional School, 55 South Ave., Atlantic Highlands.

All proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a pediatric cancer research and treatment center.

The rain-or-shine event will feature a gift auction, music entertainment, children’s activities, costumed characters, bounce house, vendors and a walkathon.

Registration for the walkathon will begin 10 a.m. The walk is scheduled for 11 a.m. There is no set walkathon fee, but donations will be accepted. Walkers who raise at least $35 will be eligible for prizes. Donations can be made via check on day of walk or online before the event at http://fundraising.stjude.org/atlantichighlands.

– Golf outing to raise funds for scholarships

Community members and local businesses are invited to tee off in support of local college students at the 36th annual Education Open Golf Tournament scheduled for Sept. 24 at Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club, 20 Shore Oaks Drive, Farmingdale. The rain date is Sept. 28.

The tournament will benefit Brookdale Community College Foundation’s “Building Minds, Building Futures” scholarship fund.

Tournament participants will have early access to the Eagle Oaks driving range beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by a “mega” buffet brunch. The full scramble tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. Golf carts and special gifts will be provided.

Following the tournament, golfers are invited to a cocktail reception with hors d’oeuvres and a gourmet awards dinner in the Eagle Oaks clubhouse at 5 p.m.

Special prizes will be awarded for individual and team achievements, including longest drive and “closest to the pin.” Blind skins games, a 50/50 cash raffle and silent and live auctions will be offered as well.

– Middletown offering preschool program

The Middletown Township Recreation Department has a Just for Toddlers preschool program for children age 18 months to 4 at the Tonya Keller Community Center, 50 Bray Ave., Middletown.

Alphabet and number recognition, counting, coloring, reading stories, arts and crafts and music are included in a structured program that prepares children for kindergarten. Classes meet one to four times per week, depending on the age group.

– Theater launches ‘Seven Guitars’

RED BANK — Two River Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, has announced the full cast and creative team for its production of August Wilson’s “Seven Guitars” at 21 Bridge Ave.

Performances will run through Oct. 4. Opening night is Sept. 18.

Directed by Brandon J. Dirden, “Seven Guitars” is the 1940s play in Wilson’s 10-play cycle exploring the African-American experience in each decade of the 20th century. Set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1948, it tells the story of Floyd “Schoolboy” Barton, a blues guitarist who sits on the edge of stardom. The production will feature original music by acclaimed jazz musician Jason Moran.

Cast members include Brittany Bellizeare, Brian D. Coats, Crystal Dickinson, Jason Dirden, Charlie Hudson III and Christina Acosta Robinson.

The creative team includes scenic designer Michael Carnahan, costume designer Karen Perry, lighting designer Driscoll Otto and sound designer David Margolin Lawson.

Tickets range from $37-$65. Discounts are available for groups, seniors and U.S. military personnel, their families and veterans. A limited number of $20 tickets is also available at each performance.
