MARLBORO — Matthew Scannapieco, who served three terms as Marlboro’s mayor beginning in 1992, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in Delaware.
On Sept. 4, Scannapieco, 71, was sentenced to 25 years for rape in the second degree, 25 years for continuous sexual abuse of a child and eight years for unlawful sexual contact in the first degree, according to Delaware Department of Justice public information officer Carl Kanefsky.
The sentence was handed down in New Castle County Superior Court in Wilmington, Del.
Kanefsky said Scannapieco will serve a total of 25 years in prison — 15 years for second degree rape and 10 years for continuous sexual abuse of a child. The remainder of those sentences will be suspended for probation. The entire eight-year sentence for first degree unlawful sexual contact was suspended for probation.
He said Scannapieco has registered as a Tier III sex offender, which is the most serious classification of a sex offender in Delaware.
Scannapieco was arrested on Aug. 29, 2014. He pled guilty to multiple counts of rape, unlawful sexual contact and sexual abuse of a child on May 18.
Scannapieco served as Marlboro’s mayor from 1992 to 2003. Prior to his election as mayor he was an appointed member of the Marlboro Zoning Board of Adjustment.
Several years after leaving office, Scannapieco pleaded guilty to accepting corrupt payments and tax evasion. He admitted that while serving as mayor, he accepted numerous bribes between 1997 and 2003. He eventually served 21 months in prison.
Scannapieco later moved to Delaware.
Asked to comment on Scannapieco’s sentence in the rape case, Marlboro Mayor Jonathan Hornik said, “I don’t believe any sentence is too short for that man for the crimes he has committed.”
Hornik said municipal employees are in the process of removing Scannapieco’s name or having it blocked from locations in which it appears.
“The residents have moved on and we are erasing his name from the history of Marlboro,” the mayor said.
