East Windsor Vol. Fire Co. 2 is reminding all residents that Oct. 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week.
Fire company members will be visiting schools in the township to talk to kids, typically, the catalyst for getting their parents’ attention.
“We observe Fire Prevention Week for a reason,“ Acting Fire Chief Steve Genthe said, “It’s a time to be conscious of your surroundings and a time to focus on things that can be harmful, dangerous and the cause of fires.“
And, he said, most of the things a person can do to prevent a fire involve simple common sense.
“For example, in the kitchen, if you’re frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food, don’t leave the room,” he said. “If you’ve consumed alcohol or are tired, don’t use the stove. If you experience an oven fire, turn it off, but DO NOT open the oven door.“
Chief Genthe added, “Never use candles in a bedroom where you may fall asleep, and make sure you keep them at least 12 inches from anything that will burn. Only use one heat-producing appliance at a time in a single outlet and use extension cords around the house only temporarily and sparingly. If you need additional outlets, consult an electrician.“
He also recommended checking the batteries in smoke detectors, rehearsing a fire drill and never attempting to fight fires alone.
Call 911 and leave, he said.
“Nearly all fires are preventable, but it’s up to you,“ the chief added.
