St. Mary Church will host 150-prize tricky tray auction 
Fri., Oct. 2 — St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church at 1900 Brooks Blvd. will present a tricky tray auction. Doors open at 5 p.m. Auction begins at 7.
More than 150 gift certificates and many prizes, including flat-screen TV, outdoor grill, Kitchen Aid mixer, iPad, X Box, two-day vacation at a Pocono resort, household items, gas cards, appliances, designer handbags, theme baskets, door prizes, food and a 50/50.
Tickets at $10 include one sheet of tickets, desserts, coffee and tea. Stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut sandwiches, meatball sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, eggplant parmesan, pierogi can be purchased. Griggstown church invites donations for rummage sale 
Oct. 2 and 3 — The Griggstown Reformed Church, 1065 Canal Road, will hold a fall rummage sale on Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.Donations can be brought in Wednesday, Sept. 30, and Thursday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon and 6 to 8 p.m. 

Martini party will benefit Burchette, Suraci campaign 
Fri., Oct. 2 — Township Republicans will have a fund-raising martini party, starting at 6 p.m., to help the re-election campaign of Township Committee members Carl Suraci and Greg Burchette. Firefighters invite public to see live burn at open house 
Sat., Oct. 3 — Fire Company No. 3 will hold a free open house at its fire station at 324 Woods Road, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Firefighters will hold live fire demonstrations, and there will be a bouncy house for the kids. Free refreshments (hot dogs, coffee, lemonade, popcorn, cotton candy and snow cones) will be provided to attendees. 
Job seekers can hear ideas about interview strategies 
Wed., Oct. 7 — Paul Elwood, associate dean for academic personnel at Rutgers University, will talk about “The Job Interview: Strategies for Success” in a free program for job seekers who are unemployed, underemployed or seeking a career change. The program takes place at Jewish Family Services offices at 150-A West High St., Somerville, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Library group will sponsor Manville community yard sale 
Sat., Oct. 10 —The Friends of the Manville Library will sponsor its first town-wide yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit the Manville Public Library. For a small fee, participants can hold their own yard sale either at their residence or in the library parking lot on South 10th Avenue. Rain date Oct. 11. Maps for locations will be available at the library Saturday morning and locations around town.

Ladies auxiliary schedules two more fall flea markets 
Sat., Oct. 10 — A flea market is scheduled for the lot behind the Hillsborough Volunteer Fire Co. No. 2 at 375 Route 206. 9 a.m. start. No parking next to the firehouse or in driveway so firefighters can park and access trucks with ease. The last flea market of the season is scheduled for Oct. 24. Proceeds benefit the volunteer fire company.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church holds monthly Slavic dinner 
Wed., Oct. 14 — St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church holds its monthly dinner, 4 to 7 p.m., in the St. Mary Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. $13 for adults (ages 9 and up) and $5 for children (8 and younger). All-you-can-eat pirohi, stuffed cabbage, kielbasa and sauerkraut, mashed potatoes. A surprise entrée will be prepared by St. Mary’s chef John Pagano. Orders to go available. South Branch church adds dinner date to its calendar 
Sat., Oct. 17 — A chicken francaise/marsala dinner and bake sale will be held at the South Branch Reformed Church, 870 River Road, from 4:30-7 pm. $14 for adults $14, $6 for children 6-12 and children 5 and under eat free. Home-school group to collect used clothing, linens, shoes 
Sat., Oct. 17 — The Hillsborough Elementary School Home-School Association will hold a fall clothing drive, 7 to 11 a.m., in the parking lot of the school at Amwell Road and Route 206. Men, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories like belts, hats, ties, shoes and handbags, soft household items like bedding, curtains, towels and stuffed animals.

Annual sale of used books, DVDs, CDs benefit local library 
Oct. 17 and 18 — The Friends of the Library annual used book and media sale will be held at the Hillsborough Municipal Building on South Branch Road on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The selection includes recent used books for adults, children and teens, as well as electronic media. The collection encompasses both fiction and non-fiction. There will be DVDs of movies and TV series for adults and children as well as music CDs, books on CD and games. All proceeds support the Hillsborough Library. 
Greek Catholic lodge will sponsor Living Well Health Fair 
Sun., Oct. 18 — A free “Living Well Health Fair,” sponsored by the Greek Catholic Union Lodge 254 will take place from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church Parish Center, 1900 Brooks Blvd. More than 20 booths will present a variety of healthful living assistance. Including physicians from Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, Somerset, Steeplechase Cancer Center, nutritional guidance with a certified nutritionist cooking and creating nutritional drinks and a reflexologist. Neshanic Garden Club will hear horticulture chairwoman 
Thurs., Oct. 22 — The Neshanic Garden Club will hold its regular monthly meeting at 9:45 a.m. at the Station House on Olive Street in Neshanic Station. At 11 a.m. Joan Lippi, the National Garden Club student judge and GCNJ Horticulture Chair for the 2015-2016 GCNJ Flower Show, will provide a workshop/overview of horticulture for the club’s October flower show, “Ghosts of the Sourlands.“
A workshop following the meeting will craft a pumpkin decorated with succulents, with components provided. Lug a mug to the light luncheon at noon. Prospective members are encouraged to attend.
Garden Club members and the public are welcome to attend and to exhibit at the free flower show, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31, at the Montgomery United Methodist Church, Sunset Road. Build your own rain barrel at stormwater management workshop 
Sat., Oct. 24 — The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Somerset County offers a workshop on stormwater management, including the proper way to control run-off, how to harvest rainwater and how to build, paint and install a rain barrel.
A rain barrel holds about 50 gallons of water, which can be used to water your garden and can help conserve water, prevent basement flooding and reduce flooding in rivers and streams.
The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ted Blum 4-H Center at 310 Milltown Road, Bridgewater. Cost of the program is $50 if you want to make a rain barrel, or $5 to attend the presentation. There will be a limit of 12 rain barrels, so registration by Friday, Oct. 16, is necessary. No walk-ins will be allowed.

Continuing events 
Community theater — Somerset Valley Players present “9 to 5, the Musical,” with song lyrics by Dolly Parton, one last weekend (until Oct. 4) at the theater at 689 Amwell Road (Route 514). The musical version of the movie celebrates gleeful revenge of the office workers as three hard-working and clever secretaries create corporate chaos while turning the tables upside-down on their sexist and loud-mouthed boss. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Farm market: Duke Farms, off Route 206 in the northern part of the township, will again hold its “Farm to Table” Market through November. Several farmers have partnered with Duke Farms to present an array of local products. As the season progresses, they hope to add farmers to the market. Open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 VFW meetings: Monthly meetings of Hillsborough VFW Post 8371 are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the county nutrition center, 339 South Branch Road.
