Garden club with deep roots seeks to cultivate growth

EDISON — Nearly 65 years after its inception, the township’s Terra Nova Garden Club continues to grow.

The club is seeking to welcome new members to its ranks, which include a diverse group from Edison and four surrounding communities, ranging in age from youth to 95 years old and encompassing a variety of races, talent levels and gardening expertise, according to Terra Nova President Jean Pizutelli.

One of the oldest and most active garden clubs in the state, Terra Nova is open to those who wish to increase their gardening knowledge via workshops, speakers and hands-on projects, Pizutelli said.

The club takes part in civic beautification projects throughout the community, with recent efforts at the Edison Public Library’s North Edison Branch and at the Edison Memorial Tower.

In addition, Terra Nova offers student scholarships, free educational programs, trips and tours, flower shows, plant and flower sales, and garden therapy.

Members of the club share flowers, plants, cuttings and a common interest in all that grows. In the summer months, members visit one another’s gardens for refreshments and enjoyment.

Terra Nova’s youth group, dubbed the G-arden Unit, has high school students from throughout the area working together on a vegetable garden and other environmental projects at Edison’s Triple C Ranch.

Evening meeting times on the fourth Wednesday of each month allow for flexibility while providing a relaxed, fun social atmosphere that has resulted in lifelong friendships, Pizutelli said.
