Fire at Lloyd Road business being investigated

ABERDEEN – The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Fire Marshal’s Office are currently investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at a warehouse at the United States Mahogany Corporation on Lloyd Road.

According to township Chief of Police John Powers, 14 fire companies responded to the three-alarm blaze, which started shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.

Charles Webster, Monmouth County public information officer, said the structure sustained significant damage from the blaze and there was only one reported minor injury to a firefighter — who has since been treated and released from a local hospital.

According to Powers, as firefighters battled the fire, which was declared under control shortly before 10 p.m. Oct. 17, State Police closed Garden State Parkway Exit 117.

New Jersey Transit also suspended service on the North Jersey Coast Line between Matawan and Hazlet as firefighter worked to extinguish the blaze.

Authorities state that during the fire, police and firefighters established a command center at St. Joseph Roman Catholic School in Keyport.

Firefighters from Keyport, Union Beach, Middletown, East Keansburg, Hazlet, North Centerville, Marlboro, Morganville, Sayreville, Morgan, Atlantic Highlands, Robertsville, Cliffwood and Aberdeen District 1 all responded to the scene.

According to its website, since 1954, the United States Mahogany Corporation have been in the business of selling “superior quality hardwoods and dimension products.”

The company has been at its current location on Lloyd Road in Aberdeen since 1983 and “stocks a large inventory of domestic hardwoods, exotic hardwoods, veneers, turning squares, dimension lumber, plywood and custom mouldings.”

According to officials, the fire occurred at part of the company’s retail and wholesale distribution yard.
