SAYREVILLE — Local, county and state officials put shovels to the ground to mark the beginning of improvements to the intersection of Main Street and White Oaks Drive.
Members of the Sayreville Borough Council, Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios and state Assemblyman John S. Wisniewski (D-Middlesex) took part in the Oct. 20 groundbreaking for the project.
The total cost of the project is $789,523, to be shared by the county and the borough. The project is expected to be awarded in November, with work to begin soon after,.
The project will include the installation of a new traffic signal and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-approved pedestrian push buttons. The concrete sidewalk will be replaced, ADA ramps will be installed and the roadway will be milled and paved.
Borough officials and residents have sought the improvements due to a number of accidents in the area.
“Middlesex County is committed to the safety and the quality of life of our residents,” Rios said. “In a way, this intersection work is symbolic of the partnership between county and local government. Just as this county route is intersected by this local road, so too, has the commitment of Middlesex County and Sayreville intersected to serve our residents.”
“Our thanks to the county and to Freeholder Rios,” said Council President David McGill. “This is long overdue and it will bring safety to Main Street and White Oaks Drive, which is a very dangerous intersection. Our thanks to everyone who participated in making this project happen.”
