NORTH BRUNSWICK — The township has been recognized for its commitment to clean water.
James Grootenboer, systems manager for American Water Services, presented The Partnership for Safe Water’s Director’s Award to township officials on Oct. 19.
Grootenboer said the program was established in 1995 to deal with cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness and attacks of diarrhea.
The voluntary program is a partnership between the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), six other water organizations and utility subscribers.
The mission is to go over and above current EPA regulations for drinking water standards, Grootenboer said.
Phase 1 is to subscribe to meet goals, phase 2 is data entry and submission to the partnerships for two years and phase 3 is a rigorous assessment of water quality and coming up with a plan to address factors, he said.
Although there will be a plaque hanging at American Water, Grootenboer said he presented town officials with their own plaque because of North Brunswick Township’s dedication to its water facility and systems.
