The Struggle

Essay contest focuses on bullying prevention

The Charles Lafitte Foundation (CLF) Kid’s Corner is the host to a “National Bullying Prevention Month” Essay Contest to encourage kids to read and improve their understanding of the effects of bullying.

Students in grades 3-12 attending a public or private school in the U.S. are invited to participate in the contest.

To enter, students must read a book listed under their corresponding grade level and write an essay sharing their own experiences that answers the following question: How does the story relate to challenges for acceptance you have experienced within your own life, or challenges you have witnessed within your community?

Winning essay-writers will receive $1,000 for his or her school library and a Kindle Fire for themselves.

Readings for grades 3-5 include “Freak the Mighty” or by Rodman Philbrick, “Goblinheart” by Brett Axel. Readings for grades 6-8 include “One for the Murphys” by Lynda Mullaly Hunt or “Schooled” by Gordon Korman. Readings for high school students include “Just Listen” by Sarah Dessen or “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini.
