TRENTON — A Ewing Township man has been charged with impersonating a police officer, and police are asking people to come forward if they believe they have been approached or pulled over by him, said Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler.
John C. Williams, 60, who is also known as Johnny Fields, was arrested Oct. 29 near his home on Crescent Avenue in Ewing Township by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit, Sheriff Kemler said.
Mr. Williams was also charged with illegal possession of personal restraints (handcuffs) and receiving stolen property (Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office official business placards), Sheriff Kemler said. Those were among the items found in his Chevrolet sport utility vehicle, following a search by the Sheriff’s Office and the Mercer County Probation Division.
Authorities also discovered New Jersey State Police work attire and an empty police pistol holder in the SUV. His black, “tinted-out” SUV also had custom police-type strobe lights in the front and rear, and a rear windshield strobe light, Sheriff Kemler said. It also had a working siren, police markings and decals on the outside of the vehicle.
Mr. Williams, who is being monitored and is on probation for a prior charge of impersonating a police officer, is being held in the Mercer County Corrections Center on $20,000 bail.
