Democrats keep control in Edison

EDISON — The Democratic candidates swept the four seats on the council during the Nov. 3 election.

Incumbents Michael Lombardi and Robert Karabinchak, along with newcomers Leonard Sendelsky and Ajay Patil, captured four-year terms on the Township Council dais. Lombardi led with 5,856 votes; Karabinchak recorded 5,849; Sendelsky collected 5,428; and Patil registered 5,277, according to unofficial results from Middlesex County.

Republican incumbent Wayne Mascola — formerly a Democrat until he defected in June — was unseated, pulling 10 percent of the vote with 3,743. His running mates, Michael Orlowski, Gaetano “Guy” Gaspari and Ashok Nayee, all received single-digit percentages of the overall vote.

The Democrats’ victory is nothing new in Edison — the party has maintained control of the council for 20 years.
