Military veterans and active duty members of the armed forces are invited to attend a Veterans Day ceremony and breakfast in Manalapan on Nov. 11.
The Manalapan Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee will host its second annual ceremony and breakfast at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 — Veterans Day — at the municipal building.
There will be a ceremony at the Manalapan veterans monument at the corner of Route 522 and Taylors Mills Road, followed by a breakfast in town hall. Applebee’s and Union Hill Bagel are supporting the breakfast.
Steve McEnery, who is a member of the Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee, said organizers of the Veterans Day ceremony are hoping to build on the success of the inaugural event in 2014.
According to information provided by McEnery, Veterans Day commemorates the end of hostilities in World War I. The ceasefire armistice was signed at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, 1918.
“I think it is extremely important that we remember the veterans and all of those who have given so much of their lives,” McEnery said.
According to the information provided by McEnery, in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service…”
Flags and wreaths may be placed on graves of deceased veterans. Veterans may pass out red poppies (the red color became a symbol for the blood spilled in the war) as a sign of remembrance.
