County introduces discount card for prescription drugs

A new Prescription Drug Discount Card Program announced by Middlesex County Freeholder Blanquita Valenti is aimed at helping to lower prescription drug costs for those who pay the full price for their medications.

The program, developed in conjunction with ProAct Inc., is offered to the county and residents at no cost, with no pre-requisites or qualifications to take advantage of the program.

Every resident — regardless of age, income or existing health coverage — is eligible for the program. Discount cards are accepted at more than 170 pharmacies within the county, and at more than 62,000 pharmacies nationwide.

Valenti, chair of the County’s Community Services Committee, recognized Freeholder H. James Polos, who initiated a prescription-savings plan several years ago.

“We were at the forefront then, and now, working with ProAct, we are looking to reach and serve even more residents,” she said.

Residents who take advantage of the program can expect to see savings ranging from 10 percent to 20 percent off the full cash price of name brand medications, and savings from 20 percent to 70 percent off the full cash price of generic medications.

“This plan can help those who have no prescription coverage, minimal prescription coverage or those who must take certain medications that are not covered by their plans,” Freeholder Director Ronald Rios said. “So, even if you have a prescription plan, I encourage you to look into the program to see if it can help you.”

The program also covers prescriptions for pets.

Middlesex County Discount Cards are being mailed to households in the county, and an inventory of cards will be provided to local pharmacies, as well as county agencies such as the Department of Community Services, the Office of Human Services and the Health Services Office.

Those with Internet access and a printer can visit www.NJRxDiscount- Card.com and print a Middlesex County card from the dropdown menu.
