Vegetarian cookbook to be discussed

The Marlboro Public Library will welcome Dr. Eve Jochnowitz to discuss Fania Lewando’s Vegetarian Cookbook, translated and adapted for the modern kitchen, published this year as “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook.” The program will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 7.

The book, which was originally published in Vilna in 1937, is filled with vivid and sometimes astonishing recipes for vegetables, drawn from Jewish tradition, from European cuisine, from the emerging health food movement, and some entirely new inventions, according to a press release.

Jochnowitz has been teaching Yiddish language, culture and literature, as well as Yiddish foodways and dance, for 20 years. She received her doctorate in performance studies from New York University. She has lectured in the United States and abroad about food in Jewish tradition, religion and ritual, as well as food in Yiddish performance and popular culture.

Registration for the Dec. 7 program is mandatory. Call the library at 732-536-9406 to register. The Marlboro Board of Trustees will be selling copies of “The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook” for $25 to benefit library programming. Jochnowitz will sign copies. Reserve a book when you call to register.
