PLAINSBORO: Volunteers sought for township boards and committees

By Lea Kahn, Staff Writer
PLAINSBORO — Wanted: A few good volunteers to serve on Plainsboro Township’s boards and committees.
Township Committee is seeking interested residents who would like to serve on any of the four advisory boards and committees, as well as the Planning Board and the Zoning Board of Adjustment. The appointments will be made in January.
Applications are available on the township’s website at www.plainsboronj.com. Interested residents can also contact Township Clerk Carol Torres at 609-799-0909, ext. 2547, or email townshipclerk@plainsboronj.com with any questions.
Meanwhile, at the Cable TV Advisory Committee, there are two openings. One is for a three-year term that expires in 2018, and the other is for an unexpired term that ends in 2016. It advises Township Committee on matters related to the township’s franchise agreement with Comcast, and on the operations and programming of local Channel 3/26.
The Environmental Advisory Committee has two openings for three-year terms that end in 2018. Its focus is on open space, water resource management, soil control, noise control, recycling, air quality and other environmental concerns.
At the Human Relations Council, there are three openings for three-year terms that expire in 2018, and one opening for a one-year term for an alternate board member that ends in 2016. There are also two openings for one-year terms earmarked for teenagers that end in 2016.
The Human Relations Council develops programs and approaches to develop community awareness, understanding and appreciation for the diverse ethnic mix that makes up Plainsboro Township, according to the Plainsboro Township website.
There are two openings on the Shade Tree Advisory Committee, for three-year terms that end in 2018. The committee advises Township Committee and the Planning Board on matters related to plantings on public properties, shade trees and landscaping.
At the Planning Board, there are two open seats — one for a four-year term that ends in 2019 for a regular board member, and another for an alternate member. That term is for two years, and end in 2017.
The Planning Board reviews development applications, adopts the Plainsboro Township Master Plan that guides development, and also reviews zoning ordinance changes before Township Committee takes final action on them.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment has three openings — two vacancies for regular members that carry four-year terms that will end in 2019, and one for an alternate member whose two-year term will expire in 2017.
Mayor Peter Cantu attributed the sense of community, from which Plainsboro benefits, to the generosity of township residents — including those who serve on the advisory boards and committees..
“The many people who give their valuable time and talents in so many different ways make this town a community and enhance the quality of life for all of us,” Mayor Cantu said.
