By Frank Mustac, Special Writer
Twenty students at Hopewell Valley Central High School were recognized as National Merit Scholars at the Board of Education meeting on Monday.
The students who achieved the academic honor are Ketaki Gujar, Blair Shields, Hannah Morin, Maya Naphade, Alamelu Sekkappan, Eric Jing, Thomas Sherman, Emily Janoski, Kyle Weekley, Kevin Crow, Brian Rentsch, Yash Balaji, Navruz Baum, Kyla Chasalow, Saffron Winton-Lavieri, Joanna Ying, Allison Rhyu, Grace Chen, Erixen Cruz and John Schaeffer.
Four of the students — Ketaki Gujar, Maya Naphade, Eric Jing and Navruz Baum — have qualified as semi-finalists.
About 1.5 million students in some 22,000 high schools across the country enter the National Merit Scholarship competition annually when they take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The 50,000 students with the highest PSAT/NMSQT selection index scores qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Of those 50,000, only 16,000 qualify as semi-finalists.
“We are proud to recognize an increasing number of National Merit Scholars,” said Lisa Wolff, president of the Hopewell Valley Regional School District Board of Education. “Their success validates our efforts to continually improve our educational program for all students in our district.”
