New schools are not simply a luxury

There has been a lot of talk around town in regards to the upcoming referendum vote on Dec. 8.

As a parent with school-aged children I wanted to say that new schools are not just something that the district wants. We need these schools.

As of now the classrooms at my children’s school are at, if not over, capacity. We are fortunate to have excellent teachers in our district. However, when they have 26-28 kids per classroom it makes the educators’ jobs extremely difficult and the ability to give the personalized attention to the children becomes impossible.

So to all those who are afraid of their taxes increasing I wanted to let you know that whether or not the new schools are built, something will have to be done to accommodate the growing number of children in our town. There is simply no space in our schools right now to add classrooms or teachers so a tax increase is coming either way. If the new schools are not approved a solution in the form of adding trailers or renting space is inevitable.

I understand that no one ever wants to see tax increases, including myself, but sometimes it is necessary. These children are the future of our town. An excellent school district can be a town’s most valuable asset driving up the property values and overall worth of the town. This small tax increase will be more than offset by the benefits it will provide.

Vote yes on Dec. 8.
