EDISON — A fifth-grade student fabricated a story about being approached by a stranger after dismissal from James Madison Intermediate School last week, according to police.

The incident occurred on Nov. 17, according to Police Sgt. Robert Dudash.

When police detectives examined security camera footage from outside the school on New Dover Road, they saw the fifthgrader, who later reported the incident, but saw no video footage to substantiate the girl’s story, according to police.

Schools Superintendent Richard O’Malley told police that during follow-up interviews with school personnel, the student admitted she was never approached by an adult male outside the school nor was she ever in danger.

“I want to thank the Edison Police Department and the school personnel for their tireless efforts to keep all students safe,” he said.

Police said the child will not face charges for making a false report.
