Next police chief brings variety of skills, experiences

Police Captain James Conroy, the current commander of the Investigative Division for the East Brunswick Police Department, will begin serving as the department’s chief of police on Jan. 1.

“I cannot thank [retiring] Chief [William] Krause enough for his years of dedicated service to our community,” Mayor David Stahl said. “He is leaving big shoes to fill but, fortunately, we have no shortage of highly qualified candidates within our own ranks to choose from.”

During the selection process, all three East Brunswick police captains were given the opportunity to interview for the position of chief.

“All three of our captains are dedicated law enforcement officers who are all more than qualified for the position of chief,” Stahl said. “Captain James Conroy has dedicated his entire career to keeping East Brunswick safe. With an impressive myriad of professional accomplishments, unique skill set and diverse educational qualifications, he has the experience necessary to make our police department more effective and efficient. I look forward to working with him and our exceptional law enforcement officers to continue to make strides to protect our community and residents.”

Conroy served as a patrolman in East Brunswick after he graduated from the Somerset County Police Academy in 1994.

He rose through the ranks, serving in multiple leadership positions including field training officer, drug recognition evaluator, squad supervisor, training facility range master, station commander and commander of Special Operations.

Conroy has also served as a sniper on the SWAT team, is a firearms and rifle instructor and instituted the East Brunswick Police Department’s first Patrol Rifle Program.

He is a decorated officer, receiving the Distinguished Service Award and earning several Letters of Commendation.

He earned a degree in marketing from Rider University and a master’s degree in human resources training and development from Seton Hall University. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command and the FBI National Academy.
