Jackson resident charged with robbery of two Howell banks

Christopher Gilman, 38, of Jackson, has been charged with two counts of second degree robbery in connection with the Oct. 10, 2014, and Nov. 1, 2014, robberies of the TD Bank at 4280 Route 9 South, Howell, Monmouth County Acting Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.

Gilman was served with a copy of the criminal complaints on Dec. 1 while he was incarcerated at the Ocean County Jail, Toms River, on charges that he robbed a TD Bank in Toms River, according to the prosecutor.

Bail on the two Howell bank robbery charges was set by state Superior Court Judge Honora O’Brien Kilgallen, sitting in Freehold, at $200,000 with no 10 percent option.

If convicted of robbery, Gilman faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in New Jersey state prison on each count.

According to the prosecutor’s office, on Oct. 10, 2014, Howell police officers responded to a report of a robbery at the TD Bank branch. Police learned that an individual wearing a mask entered the bank at about 6:59 p.m., just before the scheduled closing time, and robbed a teller. The individual indicated he had a weapon, but did not produce a weapon, and demanded money from the teller. He fled the scene after obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash.

A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and Howell police was immediately undertaken, according to the prosecutor. During the course of the investigation, Howell police responded to a second report of a robbery at the same TD Bank on Nov. 1, 2015.

The investigation revealed that a masked individual entered the bank shortly before 2:09 p.m., pushed a customer out of the way, and approached a teller. The individual demanded money and indicated he possessed a weapon, but no weapon was shown. Based upon the threat, the teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and the individual fled the scene.

Further investigation by the prosecutor’s office and the Howell police, in cooperation with special agents from the FBI and investigators from the Toms River, Jackson and Brick Township police departments, identified Gilman as the man allegedly responsible the bank robberies, according to the prosecutor.

Gilman’s Ocean County incarceration relates to the armed robbery of a Tom River TD Bank branch at 2338 Route 9 on Oct. 17, 2014. An Ocean County grand jury returned an indictment against Gilman on Sept. 30, 2015, charging him with one count of first degree armed robbery. Gilman is being held in that case on $150,000 bail with no option to post 10 percent, as set by state Superior Court Judge James M. Blaney, sitting in Toms River, according to Monmouth County authorities.
