Little Shakespeare takes on ‘Pericles’

Now in its third season, A Little Shakespeare is back to engage young audiences with the work of the Bard. Since Two River Theater is producing “Pericles” in April 2016 as part of its subscription season, A Little Shakespeare takes on the same play in 70 minutes, performed by local high school students, in the Marion Huber Theater in Red Bank Dec. 10, 11 and 12. Adapted, directed, and designed by theater professionals, this education program also boasts a teenaged crew behind the scenes.

Kate Cordaro, Two River’s director of education says, “The cast of ‘Little Shakes’ has grown so much over the past two months. It takes bravery to tackle this beast of a play and our innovative director, Jason McDowell- Green, has challenged them to really find the truth in each moment. I am incredibly proud of the work that the whole team has done and we are thrilled to share it with an audience.”

When Pericles uncovers the King’s dark secret, he is forced to flee his kingdom and navigate the roaring seas. An all-female, ensemble cast of high school students will perform Shakespeare’s thrilling and epic tale of adventure, shipwreck, and romance, for audiences ages 9 and up.

Adapted from William Shakespeare’s play and directed by Jason McDowell-Green. Cast includes: Christianah Akinsanmi (Howell High School/FPAC), Kaylee DeFreitas (Howell High School/FPAC), Sophia Jackman (Ranney School), Cristina Medlin (Colts Neck High School), Emma Mueller (Biotechnology High School), Dixie O’Connell (Red Bank Regional High School VPA), Christina Ruivivar (Howell High School/FPAC), and Isabel Wallace (Biotechnology High School).
