OLD BRIDGE — The longstanding Michael Hegarty Funeral Home has been purchased by John Vincent Scalia, a funeral director with nearly 45 years experience in the funeral business.
Scalia opened John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals in Staten Island, New York, in 1971.
The completely family-owned and operated business has now expanded into Old Bridge with Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals and Cremation Services at 3377 Route 9.
The funeral home has parking for up to 70 cars and recently redecorated wake rooms that can hold a large amount of visitors who come to pay their respects.
“We offer our customers the ease of knowing we handle everything. From the time the family calls us, until the time we leave them at the cemetery, we do it all and a Scalia family member is with them the whole time,” Scalia said.
Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals and Cremation Services offers options for cremation, graveside burial services and domestic and international transfers; caters to all religious denominations; and provides professional presentation of the deceased with all preparations done on premise.
“We pride ourselves on the expert preparation of the remains,” Scalia said, noting the funeral home also offers customers the option of renting caskets for cremations. “We were the first to rent caskets for cremation on Staten Island, over 20 years ago. When a family wants to be able to view the remains, we rent the casket for the wake. Everything is exactly the same except that the funeral service ends at the church.”
The funeral home also offers the option of duel wake services in either of the Scalia locations at 28 Eltingville Boulevard, Staten Island, or the Old Bridge location for no extra charge.
“With so many Staten Islanders moving to New Jersey, and to Middlesex County in particular, many families might want to have a wake in both locations to accommodate all family members and friends. So, for example, we can have an afternoon wake in Old Bridge and an evening wake on Staten Island,” Scalia said.
Scalia’s children and son-in-law, John Vincent Scalia, Jr., Cecilia Scalia Moran and Kevin Moran; his nephew, Jeremiah Bullen; and grandchildren, Megan and Paul McEvilly are involved in the family business.
“We realize that our role as funeral directors today is essential in assisting each and every family member in creating a truly personalized service that celebrates and honors the life of the person, while at the same time, aiding in the family grieving process,” Scalia said.
