The West Windsor-Plainsboro North boys swim team was looking forward to the challenge of facing undefeated WW-P South on Tuesday.
And while the Knights didn’t come away with a win, they did come away from their 91-79 loss able to confirm they are one of the top teams in the Colonial Valley Conference.
“We have had a great year,” said North coach Todd Robinson, whose team fell to 9-1-1 with the loss. “We came into the meet undefeated and South was undefeated so we knew this would be a good meet. Typically it is earlier in the season but this year for whatever reason it was scheduled for the last half of the season so it worked out well.”
The Knights performed well in the loss to the Pirates, with the outcome coming down to the final event. They picked up a pair of wins each from freshman Matthew Lequang (200 free and 400 free) and junior Deion Alfajora (200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke). Both swimmers are newcomers to the team and have added punch at the top of the lineup to go with the depth the Knights already enjoyed.
“We got a couple of really solid guys in,” said Robinson, whose team was scheduled to conclude the regular season on Thursday against Ewing. “Matt Lequang is a freshman and Deion Alfajora is a junior in his first year. Those guys are both great additions. We have had quite a few kids come in this year. We have 14 or 15 quality kids that came in this year. So we are a pretty deep team.
“Deion moved into the district last year. He didn’t swim for us last year but we are certainly thrilled to have him this season.”
Like the Pirates, the Knights came into Tuesday’s showdown with an unbeaten record. The only blemish was an early-season tie against Notre Dame.
“Based on our dual meet season I would like to think we are one of the top three teams in the CVC,” Robinson said. “So we like our chances going into the county championship meet. I would like to be top three at the county meet. The county is solid and I think it should be a pretty good meet.
“And we have some relays that have already qualified for the Meet of Champions. Matt has already qualified in the 200 free and 400 free and Deion has qualified in the 100 breast.”
The North girls fell to 8-3 with a 108-62 loss to the Pirates. Becca Adlai-Gail picked up a win in the 200 free, Hana Kato won the 100 butterfly and Gwen Yuen won the backstroke
“Becca had a great day,” Robinson said. “Hana Kato had another great day. Jacelyn Tarn has had a very good season for us. The girls have performed very well this season.”
