Last weekend’s blizzard forced the postponement of the Shore Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships from Jan. 22 to Jan. 27.
The John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River is the site for the meet, which will pit the best track and field athletes from Monmouth and Ocean counties against each other.
At the Monmouth County Championships Jan. 8, four Freehold Regional High School District runners claimed county titles, led by Freehold Township High School’s Ciara Roche and Howell High School’s Niamh Hayes, who set new meet records. Roche lowered the girls 1,600-meter run mark to 4:51.85 in her victory, while Hayes took the girls 3,200 record below 11:00 with her time of 10:58.25.
Freehold Township’s Jake Konig won the boys 3,200-meter run in 9:29.01, and Marlboro High School sprinter/hurdler Kwaku Amponsan captured the 55-meter hurdles (7.98).
The Shore Conference meet is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. It is the final tune-up before the state meets begin with the sectional championships. Freehold Township, Manalapan High School and Marlboro are in NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV, which will hold its championships Feb. 12. Colts Neck High School and Freehold High School are in Central Jersey Group III, and that meet is Feb. 5. Howell is grouped in South Jersey Group IV, and that meet is Feb. 13.
The Bennett complex is the location for all of the state meets.
