These athletes delivered outstanding performances that outshined the blizzard this past weekend.
Middletown North High School’s Anthony Vetrano registered his 100th career victory, winning by a decision over Howell’s Ryan Mater in their 195-pound match.
Howell did hand the Lions their first A North Division loss, 37-31.
Earlier this year Vetrano’s teammate Chad Freshnock (220/heavyweight) reached the 100-victory milestone
The Howell High School wrestling team was in Florida last weekend competing in the Chase Life Invitational in Naples. Freshman Christian Murphy was the lone Rebel to win a championship when he grabbed the title at 152 pounds. Howell, which is taking aim at a second Shore Conference Tournament championship this week, finished second in the 29-team tournament.
Rumson-Fair Haven High School guard Brendan Barry became the boys’ basketball team’s all-time leading scorer when he connected on a game-high 23 points to guide the Bulldogs to a 53-48 victory over Manasquan.
Barry ended the game with 1,426 career points. Palvin Williams, a 1973 RFH grad, had held the Bulldog scoring mark.
Tatum Evans scored a career-high 34 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the red-hot Marlboro High School girls’ basketball team won its sixth straight game with a 73-62 triumph over Manalapan.
South Brunswick High School’s Desirae Osley won the 400-meter dash (58.56) and ran a leg on the victorious 4×400 relay team (4:05.11) as the Vikings repeated as the Greater Middlesex Conference Girls’ Indoor Track and Field champion. This year ‘s meet was held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island.
Osley was joined on the relay team by Brianna Araque, Lathisa Witherspoon and Chloe Hypolite.
Ray Rivera won the 800-meter run in 1:54.45 and ran on the Old Bridge winning 4×400 relay team (3:24.92) leading the Knights to the boys’ indoor GMC championship.
Mike Del Vecchio, Chris Rampno and Kenny Brakoh were the other runners on the 4×400 team
Saryeville sptinter/hurdler Benjamin Aidoo was the only individual double winner at the GMC indoor track and field championships. The Bomber won the 55 dash in 6.49 and came back to take the hurdles in a time of 7.60.
