A free STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) program for Milltown-area parents is set for 6-7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 4-March 24, in the media center at Parkview School, 80 Violet Terrace, Milltown.
The program, which features a parenting-education curriculum designed to help parents of 6- to 12-year-olds learn effective ways to relate to their children from birth through adolescence, will be presented in a group study format, with optimal group sizes ranging from 6 to 14 parents.
The goals of STEP are to provide parents with an increased ability to identify goals of misbehavior, increased alternatives to misbehaviors, increased encouragement skills, increased skill in communication and cooperation (parent and child), increased skill in discipline, increased skill in choosing parenting approaches, increased child self-esteem and confidence and decreased inappropriate behaviors in disciplining children and teens.
Wellspring Center for Prevention will provide program leaders. Funding for the event is made possible by the Milltown Municipal Alliance Committee and the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse.
