Last weekend’s blizzard forced the postponement of the Shore Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships from Jan. 22 to Jan. 27.
The John Bennett Indoor Athletic Complex in Toms River is the site for the meet, which will pit the best track and field athletes from Monmouth and Ocean counties against each other.
At the Monmouth County Championships Jan. 8, Red Bank Catholic (RBC) High School’s girls and Christian Brothers Academy’s (CBA) boys were the winning teams. The Ocean County meet was Jan. 6 and Southern Regional High School and Jackson Memorial High School were the girls and boys winners, respectively.
Local track and field athletes who will look to complete the county-conference double include Ocean Township High School’s Elliot Gindi (1,600), Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School’s Douglas Young (pole vault) and CBA’s Mike Zupko (400), Drake Anzano (800) and the 4×400 relay team of Tim Jacoutot, Brendan Bodisch, Andrew Calae and Zupko for the boys.
For the girls, its RBC’s Fidele Jules (shot put), Kassie Riley (high jump) and the Caseys’ 4×400 relay team of Sam Spallanzani, Abby Collins, Carley Friend and Shayla McNally, as well as Middletown High School North’s Kayla Pfleger (55 dash).
The conference championships are the final tune-up before the state meets begin next month.
The state sectionals kick those off. Central Jersey Groups II and III are Feb. 5 followed by Central Jersey Groups I and IV Feb. 12.
The top-six finishers from the sectional move on to the NJSIAA Group Championships Feb. 19-20.
The Bennett complex is used for all of the NJSIAA indoor meets.
