SAYREVILLE – The accomplishments of the Sayreville Leprechaun’s Junior Pee Wee cheerleading squad have been recognized by the borough.
Following their showings in three Pop Warner cheer competitions, the squad received certificates of achievement from Mayor Kennedy O’Brien and the Borough Council at the beginning of the council’s Jan. 25 meeting.
In the Central Jersey Cheer Competition on Oct. 10 at the Sun National Center in Trenton, the Sayreville Leprechauns came in second place. They subsequently placed second again at the Eastern Region Cheer and Dance Championships on Nov. 4 and won a bid to travel to Walt Disney World and compete in the National Cheer and Dance Championships on Dec. 9. In the national competition, the squad finished fourth out of 15 teams.
Kaitlyn Fryer, the coach of the Junior Pee Wee squad, stated that their accomplishments were great for Sayreville, their Pop Warner program, the Sayreville Leprechauns and all the cheerleading programs in the borough.
“We want to thank the parents, the town for supporting us, our executive board, all the coaches, my assistants, my junior coaches… everyone worked really hard,” Fryer said. “And of course, the girls who worked the hardest, and gave it their all every time they performed that routine, which ultimately got them to Disney and so forth.”
After the squad received their certificates, they were congratulated by O’Brien and each member of the council.
“Congratulations on all your hard work,” said Council President Daniel Buchanan. “Many years ago, I went to Trenton and watched my niece. It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work.”
“I’m so glad you had this experience,” said Councilman Pat Lembo. “You’ll remember this for the rest of your lives. I had the pleasure of being able to do this about eight years ago; my daughter was a Midget and went down to Florida. And she still talks about it to this day. It’s a memory you’ll treasure for a long time.”
