To the editor:
The proposed siting of a mosque and a pre-K school near Route 206 on New Amwell Road is the correct stance for our town to adopt.
We could not believe our town is one of the “100 best places to live” if we adopted a discriminatory posture toward any religion or sexual or ethnic group.
The lack of approval for a pre-K school for Muslim children at that site is puzzling. By the fusion of two parcels of land, a lot size of 2.5 acres (or over 100,000 square feet) has been proposed. Further, street access has been doubled, allowing for bus access on one side and bus egress on the other side.
Like any other preschool experience, group interaction, the value of cooperation and learning to follow rules are very important values to be learned. Of course, it is to be anticipated there will be the teaching of Islamic religious tenets. During this process the children will learn memorization and discipline, which will stand them in good stead when they are integrated into the public school system.
Permission for a 49-student pre-K Islamic school in Hillsborough should be re-visited.
