The Metuchen Public Library, 480 Middlesex Ave., Metuchen, will serve as the host to Rich Puerzer, baseball historian and frequent presenter at the annual Cooperstown Baseball Symposium, at 7:30 p.m. on March 31.
“Another Exciting Chapter in Baseball History with Rich Puerzer: The 1946 Negro League World Series: The Newark Eagles vs. The Kansas City Monarchs” features one of the greatest post-season series in the history of professional baseball—the 1946 Negro League World Series between the Newark Eagles and the Kansas City Monarchs. Both the Eagles and Monarchs were powerhouse teams. The series included a number of future Hall of Fame players and was closely contested, going the full seven games. It was played over the course of 12 days in late September in Newark and Kansas City, as well as in New York City and Chicago.
Dr. Puerzer’s presentation is replete with original photographs and news clippings, trivia, and anecdotes of the players and the plays. The talk will also focus on baseball in the context of the United States in the 1940s. The free event is paid for by the Friends of the Metuchen Library, and it is open to baseball enthusiasts, fans of American History, and all who are interested—ages 9 to 99! The presentation will be followed by a Q and A with the audience and some fun baseball trivia. Refreshments will be served. For more information, email Katherine Liss at [email protected].
