The Hickory Corner Branch of the Mercer County Library System will celebrate National Poetry Month and National Library Week in April by holding two “poet-tree” contests.
Patrons are encouraged to contribute a leaf to the poet-tree by writing an original poem about the library or passing along a personal favorite. Two poet-trees, one in the adult section of the library and one in the children’s area, will be displayed throughout April. National Library Week is April 10-16.
Each patron who contributes a poem will be entered in a drawing for a Barnes & Noble gift card.
“Our ‘poet-tree’ contest is a fun way for budding young poets to show off their talent,” said Andrea Cozzitorto, Hickory Corner Branch’s youth services librarian. “We are asking kids to write a poem about the library to celebrate National Library Week.”
This year marks the 20th anniversary of National Poetry Month, according to the Academy of American Poets. Each April libraries, schools, booksellers and poets celebrate the unique contribution of poetry to our culture. More information about National Poetry Month can be found on the Academy of American Poets website, www.poets.org.
National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to reflect upon the contributions of our nation’s libraries, librarians and library workers while promoting library use and support. More information can be found on the American Library Association’s web site, www.ala.org.
