Muslim Center of Somerset County’s application to locate on New Amwell Road was postponed Wednesday, April 6, by the township zoning Board of Adjustment.
A special meeting — outside of the board’s regular schedule — was slated for Wednesday, May 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the municipal building.
The Muslim Center asked for the postponement when its attorney was ill.
The Muslim Center is seeking to inherit the 2014 board approval of the Chabad of Somerset County to use a residence at 22 New Amwell Road for its spiritual leader, and to use the larger, former multi-family house behind it on a flag lot at 26 New Amwell Road for a house of worship.
The conditions imposed on the Jewish center would carry to any subsequent owner. The Muslim center is seeking few changes to the physical restrictions, but would have different, longer hours of operation.
Neighbors are objecting because they believe the Muslim Center would attract more than the allowed 49-person maximum at the house of worship at any one time. Objectors think the Muslim center would also exceed the allowable number of 28 parking spaces.
No formal legal notice of the May 25 meeting will be required to be sent to neighbors.
