EAST BRUNSWICK – The East Brunswick Elks No. 2370 has been feeding the hungry within the community for more than 20 years.
This past year, the Elks were able to feed 35 families in the area for Thanksgiving, Christmas/Hanukkah and then again for Easter/Passover.
The deliveries are done with the help of non-perishable grocery donations that are collected throughout the year as well as ShopRite gift cards. ShopRite of Spotswood donates the reusable grocery bags that are used to distribute the food.
“Without the donations from the members of the lodge as well as caring members of the community, these deliveries wouldn’t be possible,” said Melissa Bobbins, the chairperson of Feed the Hungry since 2011. “They say charity begins at home, and it is so sad that there are many families in our own community that would have to go without food on their table because of unseen circumstances that have them down on their luck. That is why charitable organizations such as the B.P.O.E. of Elks are so important.”
