LAWRENCE — A 78-year-old woman suffered minor injuries when she was yanked from her car by a carjacker, who then jumped into the vehicle and drove off from the Lawrence Shopping Center on Brunswick Pike Monday afternoon, according to the Police Department.
The victim told police that she had finished loading groceries in her car in the parking lot outside the Acme grocery store and was sitting in her car when she was approached by a man. He leaned into the car and demanded the keys.
When she refused to give him the keys to the silver 2013 Kia Rio sedan, he grabbed her by both wrists and pulled her out of the car, police said. She received minor injuries to both of her hands, wrists and knee.
After pulling her out of the car, the carjacker got into the car and drove off in an unknown direction, police said. Police officers searched the area, but could not find the car or the suspect. The New Jersey license plate on the car is N62-EAX.
The carjacker is described as a black man, about 6 feet tall, and weighing about 250 pounds. He is described as middle-aged. He was wearing dark pants and a dark sweatshirt.
Officer Marc Caponi and Detective Robert Potter are conducting the investigation. Anyone with information on the incident should call Detective Sgt. Joseph Lech IV at (609) 896-1111, or email [email protected].
