Four Hightstown High School students were recognized for their academic achievements in the National Merit Scholarship Program and the United States Presidential Scholars Program at the April 11 meeting of the East Windsor Regional School District board of education.
Finalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program are seniors Timothy J. Aveni, Abigail C. Nickerson, and Swetha Subramaniam. They are among the 1.5 million students who participated in the program and have met all requirements to be considered a finalist.
Of the 1.5 million students that originally entered the National Merit Scholarship Program, only 15,000 have reached the rank of Finalist. From the rank of finalist, 7,400 students will become actual Merit Scholarship winners. Notification of the winners of the Scholarship will be made this spring.
In addition, senior Christian Sherwin has been named as a candidate in the 2016 United States Presidential Scholars Program. His candidacy was based on an outstanding perfect performance score of 36 on the ACT Assessment.
Of the 3.3 million high school seniors graduating this year, Christian is one of approximately 4,000 students to receive this invitation.
This program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in academic success, leadership and service to school and community.
