We were saddened to read that the Princeton fireworks won’t take place this year because of funding. This is a tradition that families from near and far treasure. It is a symbol of the founding of our nation.
We have just read that the Spirit of Princeton committee has determined that they will only keep three of the four annual celebrations. We understand that there is a financial crisis here (that in itself is pathetic in an affluent town like Princeton), but if it is necessary to reduce the cost of these celebrations, why on earth would it be decided to drop something for the Fourth of July? Every town in the United States of America manages to have something to commemorate our Independence Day.
Pam Hersh writes that “the fireworks event was less dedicated to the individuals who served our nation than the other events.” How would we be celebrating any of these “other events” if it were not for our independence?
How about asking Princeton University to foot the bill for the fireworks, since it is celebrated on its property? It would be a nice public relations gesture from the university, which might be a very good idea!
