OCEAN TOWNSHIP — Beginner and inexperienced golfers can learn how to chip, putt and drive this spring at the Colonial Terrace Golf Course.
The Ocean Township Recreation Department recently rolled out “Get Golf Ready,” a five-week course for beginners to learn the basic fundamentals of golf.
“So, the program is taught by our PGA professional, Dale Shankland, and it is designed for adults with little or no golf experience, it’s for people who don’t think they have time to learn golf,” said Marion Lynch, outreach coordinator for the Township of Ocean Department of Human Services.
“So, in five lessons they’ll be taught the basics of the game, the basic swings and also how to use and care for their clubs, how to play the game and course etiquette. So, they’ll get all the basics they’ll need to get started in golf.”
Lynch said the program includes five, one-hour group lessons with sessions both during the day and at night. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own golf clubs, but the course will also provide clubs for those who do not have them.
According to Lynch, golf is a good way for people to enjoy the spring weather.
“Golf is a pastime for people of all ages, and it’s a great way to get outdoors and enjoy fresh air and get a little exercise,” she said. “It is a great skill that anyone can learn at any age.”
Classes began April 11 and April 18.
Colonial Terrace offers more than 2,600 yards of golf in a spectacular setting at 1003 Wickapecko Drive. The course is open daily from 7 a.m. to dusk, weather permitting. Green fees are just $13 during the month of April for all golfers.
Beginning May 1, the weekday fee for Ocean Township residents is $19 and the weekend fee is $22. Nonresidents pay $24 weekdays and $27 on weekends, with discounted twilight rates and discounts for junior and senior golfers, both residents and nonresidents. Pull carts, clubs and golf cars are available for rental.
Shankland, the PGA pro, offers private and group lessons for golfers of all ages and abilities.
Special events and discounts are offered throughout the season, including free golf for moms on Mother’s Day (May 8), free golf for dads on Father’s Day (June 19), a junior tour, family golf clinics and an adult/child tournament.
