Old Bridge Library programs tell stories from around the world

The Old Bridge Public Library will continue its youth programs that celebrate cultural diversity, funded by the library’s recent Dia grant.

Youth Stages will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Children’s Book Day with a presentation of “Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock” at 3 p.m. on April 30. The event will tell the story of Anansi, the trickster spider of African folklore, as he plays a joke on animal friends.

The library will hold a program on Mexican celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo and Dia de los Muertos through stor time and craft at 4 p.m. May 4. In addition, at 7 p.m., May 6, the Tweens Night Out program will feature a Cinco de Mayo theme.

“Not So Scary Stories From Around the World,” where participants will pretend to be camping as they make edible campfires and listen to “slightly” scary stories from around the world, will take place at 4 p.m. May 11.

Next is “My Tooth is Loose! Tooth Fairy Stories from Around the World,” at 4 p.m. on May 18, which will discuss how children in various countries deal with the loss of their teeth. The program will include a craft and story.

A “Yummm, Food” program will round out the month at 7 p.m., May 25. Geared towards young and old “foodies,” this session will feature food themes and multi-cultural food stories, and participants will create fruit sushi made with bananas and strawberries.
