The weather is heating up—finally—and so are our local athletes. Take a look at some of our scholastic stars and how they performed this past weekend.
And heating up is what Christian Brothers Academy’s Chris Gotterup did on the golf course.
Gotterup scorched the Howell Park Golf Course at the Monmouth County Golf Tournament, where he set a new tournament record by firing a six-under-par 66 en route to winning his second straight county tournament .
His sharp shooting on the course enabled him to breeze to the title by seven strokes over the runner-up golfer.
The junior broke the previous tournament record of 68 that was set by Rumson-Fair Haven’s Charlie Edler.
Led by the outstanding shot making of Gotterup, CBA won its third straight county championship.
Tom Holdorf made a sensational varsity debut with the Freehold High School baseball team.
The 6-2, left-handed pitcher made his first varsity start for the Colonials against Keyport in the Monmouth County Baseball Tournament and tossed a no-hitter in a 7-0 victory. The junior pitched to the minimum number of batters, 21, over seven innings in the victory. He struck out 10 and walked no one.
Allentown High School’s Heather Devine pitched five perfect innings of softball, striking out five batters and walking none in the no-hitter as the Redbirds beat Trenton, 17-0, in a five-inning game. Devine also contributed a two RBI double in the home victory for Allentown.
Red Bank Catholic’s Nicole Totland repeated as the Monmouth County Girls Golf Tournament champion carding a 77 on the Suneagles Golf Club course in Eatontown. Totland won by eight strokes as she led the Caseys to a sixth straight county tournament championship.
