HIGHTSTOWN – The Borough Council introduced an ordinance regarding the licensing of massage parlors, bodywork and somatic therapists during Monday night’s meeting.
“I will indicate that this has been recommended by the health officer (Jill Swanson) and it’s based upon an ordinance that is in affect in West Windsor,” said Borough Attorney Frederick Raffetto.
Borough Administrator Henry Underhill said that the ordinance was moved to the agenda because a person inquired about opening an establishment in a follow-up email on Tuesday.
“It was decided that having the proper ordinance in place would help assure that only legitimate businesses operated in Hightstown,” he said. “This is not a comment on any existing or proposed business.”
Mr. Underhill said he was not sure if any massage businesses currently exist in the borough.
According to the ordinance, no person, firm or corporation shall operate any establishment or utilize any premises in the Borough of Hightstown as or for a massage, bodywork and somatic therapy establishment unless or until such person, firm or corporation has obtained a license from the municipal clerk.
The public hearing is scheduled for May 2.
