EAST WINDSOR – Local middle school students will be hosting a flea market Saturday, April 30, to benefit families impacted by domestic violence and abuse.
“This is our second Service Saturday event,” said Melvin H. Kreps Middle School Intervention Counselor Kristen Cifuentes. “We are always looking for ways to provide kids with opportunities to help others outside of school.”
She said that school officials encourage the students to engage in community service and Service Saturday events, which are great ways to give students and the community a chance to collaborate for a good cause.
The flea market will be from 10 a.m. to noon in multipurpose room at the school, 5 Kent Lane. Students will be volunteering their time to give back to the community. Those attended are asked to bring cash only.
“While brainstorming ideas for our next event, we heard about another school district having a similar flea market to raise money for charity,” said Ms. Cifuentes. “We thought this was such a great idea, we decided to implement it ourselves.”
She said the goal is to not only raise money for Womanspace, but to raise awareness of its involvement in the community, while also providing students a chance to open their minds, learn about the challenges some community members face, and help others who are in need.
“We chose Womanspace because we were looking to support local agencies that serve members of our community and we feel they are a very inspirational organization who does important work for local families,” said Ms. Cifuentes.
She said the Kreps staff and students will be “working” the flea market by helping to prepare in advance and also being there on the day of the event.
“We are asking for the community’s support by donating their gently used goods to be sold at the flea market,” she said. “People can donate household items, books, dvds, sports equipment, games, clothing, toys, etc.”
No furniture, TVs or computers will be accepted, she added.
Those donating items can drop them off at the school from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 28.
